Santorum: We have less freedom now that in 1776 (except if you are a Black, a woman, a child or, even forbid, gay)
This is the frothy mixture that exited Rick Santorum mouth recently. The words are important because Santirum is one of the people angling to become the GOP nominee for president of the United States.
Our founders said [our] rights were given to us to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Does anyone here believe that first inalienable right is as whole as it was at the time of our founding? It isn’t. Does anyone believe that our freedom is as whole as it was at the time of our founders? It is not.
Really? Of course, Santorum is speaking only to the GOP’s core audience: White males. If you are Black, you might disagree with that. Officially, if you were Black you counted only as 5/8th of a human, and you didn’t have any rights at all. If you were born in the South, you were a property of someone else. If you were Catholic, you were pretty much treated like sh*t. If you were a woman, well, you had no rights that weren’t given to you by your husband. A child? Off to work as soon as you could walk. Poor? Couldn’t even vote. And if you were HOMOSEXUAL? Better keep your mouth shut.
But if you were w hite male with a job — the target audience of the GOP — you were in like Flynn. Errr … Flynn wasn’t an IRISHMAN was he” Yeah, no Irish need apply.
And once again, I appologize for accurately quoting Think Progress.
