Interviewing Tips (newbies take note; old timers take a refresher course!)

I’ve had more than my share of interviews in the last year. Some have gone exceptionally well, others not so much. As a result, I feel as if I am somewhat qualified to pass on some interviewing tips to those of you who are new to the workforce, reentering the job market, or desperately looking for work in this crappy economy.
    1) Let’s back up. In order to get the interview, you must have a good resume and cover letter. Have your resume professionally written, or at the very least have someone knowledgeable about resumes look it over. (Shameless plug: That would be me.) Have several versions that you can send out based on the kind of job you’re applying for (i.e. I have a resume that highlights only my writing and another that encompasses all of my marketing experience).
Target your cover letter to specific job requirements and your [...]

    527 Update

Since the fools next-door have set the kitchen on fire cooking french fries its been very busy with the clean up. The company has been out almost every day for the past week and a half. They have cleaned the house pretty much inside and out at least the windows. I’m guessing they don’t do grass because its looking very tall especially in the back where code can’t see it.
Today is going to be a very noisy day however they have fired up the vacuum cleaner thats mounted in the van and it is VERY LOUD. I am glad we need to do errands today.
From all the activity it should not be long before the next batch of neighbors move in. Can’t wait to see what thats going to bring(SARCASM). Considering what we have had in the past I don’t have very high hopes of them being any better.
    The good [...]

ROOFTOP GARDEN OF NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF ILLINOIS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH GENEROUS DONATION

Gerald & Mary Lynn Flaherty gift will allow completion of area
Gerald and Mary Lynn Flaherty are known to many in the Peoria area because of his 43-year career with Caterpillar. Many may not be aware they are among those who know all too well what it means to have a child born early. All three of their sons were born prematurely and required neonatal and pediatric specialty care. For this reason, the Flaherty’s have, as Jerry puts it, “a soft spot” in their hearts for children in need and the organizations that care for them.
This soft spot led to their involvement with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Illinois and their decision to donate $500,000, which will fund the Rooftop Garden outside the Pediatric Critical Care Floor of the new Children’s Hospital building. The Rooftop Garden was in the original plans for the Milestone Project [...]

    Peoria hospital for sale?

    EXCLUSIVE
For writing a column in a monthly newspaper I’m proud of the scoops I’ve had over the years. This column was the first to predict a federal judgeship for Judge Jim Shadid and the first to forecast that Chillicothe’s IVC would join the Mid-State 6. Here’s another one to remember. Don’t be surprised to learn that one of Peoria’s hospitals is shopping the market to sell to a national health system. That’s the rumor floating around the medical community. The rumor persists that the top official has been involved in off and on negotiations. No one can explain why the hospital is allegedly “being shopped.” Talks reportedly have been very secretive for obvious reasons. That’s the rumor. Which hospital? Guess!

It’s not about defending a religion, it’s about opposing a slow slide into fascism

“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” — Sinclair Lewis quotes (American Writer, 1885-1951)
I’m stepping outside this column’s normal subject matter — news and media in Peoria — to discuss an extremely important topic: The country’s slow striking embrace of fascism.
It should go without saying that just because someone is a member of a particular religion, that does not mean they are equally guilty of the sins of some members of that same religion. And isn’t it a cornerstone of American society that ALL religions enjoy equal rights, not just the popular ones? And how about the rule that we all enjoy equal protection under the law?
The “Ground Zero Mosque” issue seems to have vast segments of the population willing to toss these cherished ideals into the garbage. [...]

We Were Promised an IMAX Theatre!

by Merle Widmer, Peoria County Board Member
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis was recently quoted in the Journal Star: “I think a number of people in the community as well as myself, were under the impression there would be an IMAX theatre in the Peoria Riverfront Museum (PRM).” He went on to say, “If there isn’t, I guess the concern is will the alternate make the County and the PRM feel the project still has the same energy that it would have with an IMAX?”
County Board member Andrew Rand and Chairman of the PRM Construction Committee has said, “I don’t think we’re specifically hung up on IMAX which is a specific brand.” Besides, Andrew says it’s too costly.  C’mon Andrew, the referendum was sold on the basis of there being and IMAX theatre.
Here are several other examples of that:

    Birth Pangs

There’s no way we can keep living like the last book of the Bible is fiction. It isn’t. It is now our daily news.
If you’ve ever stepped into a church, been to Sunday School or cracked open a Bible, you know it’s real. But trust me when I say that what we are seeing now are just the “birth pangs” of something far worse on the horizon for planet earth.
Lately I’ve been buried in books, gobbling them down like a starving child. I want to know what’s going on around me, what’s coming at us, what’s going down and what I should do about it. Don’t you?
Don’t ignore this, don’t pretend it isn’t happening. Get out of that safe, happy, American church mentality and look around. It’s here. It’s the beginning of the end.
    I was reading this [...]

Wildlife Prairie Park is much more than just a walk in the park – Check it out!

Home videos document dates of visits to Wildlife Prairie Park as far back as 1984. Our three children were 10, 9, and 7 then and we frequented the park. I could possibly verify the specific year we joined although some 26 years of confirmed park patronage suffices.
We shared many good times watching the animals, walking trails, playing on the playground, checking out the gift shops, and of course, eating picnic lunches or dinners under the trees. My husband and I attended Pops on the Prairie performances, and for a while there were special dinners for members. We were always pleased with the perks of buying a family membership.  Even when our kids were teens, we’d still visit the park, although not as often. But it was a good getaway and a great place for feeling more in touch [...]
