Look at gutters and downspouts with the rain coming…

Ensure your gutters and downspouts are clean. It’s being projected that the next 3 – 4 days in the Peoria area will bring heavy rain. Use a garden hose and/or a yard blower to clean most gutters of branches, leaves, etc.  In more extreme cases, Ive seen toys, balls and even dead birds clogging gutters.  If you have those protective gutter covers, pay attention to them. If they are too large, they will in fact cause water to build up behind them. This will cause moisture under the shingle edge and possible water damage to the felt paper, plywood sheathing, and fascia board.  Smaller is better here with those covers. In either case, use caution when on the roof and/or ladders. Also make sure downspout lengths are a minimum of 3′ away from the foundation. This will decrease the chance of water entering your basement.
