Smoke detectors should be installed in every room where someone sleeps and on every level of the home. They need to be on the ceiling about 18″ from the wall and near the door in the bedrooms. The noise will draw the occupant towards the door and reduce confusion in a smoky environment. Smoke detectors on each level should at the top of stairways at or near the ceiling. Carbon monoxide alarms need to be on every level of the home where ” sleeping rooms ” are. Install around 2′ – 4′ from the floor and in common central areas like a hallway or near where the levels change. Always sleep with your bedroom door closed.
